Why Red Light Is Better at Night

Your eyes have two types of light receptors: cones for color vision in bright light, and rods for low-light vision. Rods are extremely sensitive to blue and white light — when exposed, they need 20-30 minutes to readjust to darkness. Red light, however, has minimal impact on rod cells, preserving your night vision.

This is why submarines, military vehicles, and astronomical observatories use red lighting at night. It is also why a red screen flashlight is vastly better than a white LED when you need light at 3 AM.

When Red Screen Light Is the Right Choice

  • Night reading — check your phone, read a few pages, or look at a map without waking up fully.
  • Camping — a red glow inside the tent does not blind your tent-mate or attract insects as much as white light.
  • Midnight bathroom trips — navigate without shocking your eyes awake.
  • Checking on kids — a soft red glow does not disturb their sleep.
  • Astronomy — preserve dark adaptation for stargazing.
